USAT General A. W. Greeley in 1946

The USAT General A.W. Greeley was the ship that transported John Willie Taylor to Japan right after basic training. The USS General A. W. Greely (AP-141) was a General G. O. Squier-class transport ship named for U.S. Army general Adolphus Greely. She was transferred to the U.S. Army as U SAT General A. W. Greeley in 1946. On 1 March 1950 she was transferred to the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS) as USNS General A. W. Greely (T-AP-141). She was later sold and converted to a container ship and operated under several names before being scrapped in 1986.

Motor Sergeant in the Battalion Motor Pool

As Motor Sergeant in the Battalion Motor Pool, he was responsible for the duties of 80 enlisted men and the maintenance of 80 vehicles. Checked all vehicles for condition and compiled reports on vehicles requiring repair. He made daily tour of the shop, inspecting completed and new repair work. Suggested improvements and assisted in all problems requiring more extensive knowledge of repair. Assigned drivers to vehicles and checked with office personnel on reports and requisitions. He supervised the requisitioning of all parts and equipment. He was completely responsible for the completed work.

John Taylor's Gravesite

He did not want to be buried in Houston's National Cemetery. Instead, he requested to be buried not from his local community -- Paradise Golden Gate Cemetery, aka Oak Park Cemetery located east of Highway 59 North between Laura Koppe and Weaver in the Oak Park area on 13 Feb 2010
