According to his widow's 1916 application to the Commissioner of Pensions for assistance, she stated that . . . "I am the widow of John A McLemore, deceased, who departed this life on the 18th day of September, A.D. 1906, in the county of Dallas in the State of Texas. . . . I was married to him on the 8th day of March, A.D. 1859, in the county of Leon, in the State of Texas. . . . He was Captain of Company "I" 28 T.D. Calvary - Walker's Texas Division. Application for Headstone. McLemore, Jno. A., Captain, Company I 28th Texas Cavalry. DOD Sept. 18, 1906. Oak Cliff Cemetery, Dallas, Texas. To be shipped to Jno. C. McLemore, 832 Wilson Bldg., Dallas, Texas. This application is for the unmarked grave of a soldier. It is understood the stone will be furnished and delivered at the railroad station or steamboat landing above indicated, at Government expense, freight prepaid, and agreed that it will be promptly removed and set up at private expense.
