State of North Carolina }

Person County } On this 17 day of Dec’r, personally ath ppeared in open Court before the Justices of the County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions for Person County, now siting John Clayton a resident of the County aforesaid aged about seventy four years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That in the year 1780 he was drafted for three months in the militia of North Carolina; that at the time of his being drafted he was a resident of Caswell County in the State of North Carolina; that he was placed under the command of Captain [David] McFarland and Lieutenant Parks and marched from Caswell Court House by Hillsborough to Salisbury and thence to Camden in South Carolina where he joined the America...   [ Read more » ]

Census Analysis of Family Structure, with Timeline Events, Including Sources

 The Claytons (3 of 4 brothers, sons of Daniel Clayton and Ann Clark) settled near Roxboro the present day county seat (Person County, North Carolina). With Roxboro as center, a circle with a radius of four miles encompassed most of the early Clayton homesteads.  After coming to Caswell County John (Senior), Thomas and Richard claimed land on the headwaters of Mayo Creek.
