Spring 1837 – near Austin, Texas
"Captain Andrews was appointed to the command to succeed Captain Coleman, and while he was captain, the Rangers had a brush with the Comanches near Austin. In the Spring of 1837 the men were sitting around the camp... when their attention was attracted by the flare ofa campfire on the opposite side of the Colorado. In response to a call for volunteers, Lieutenant Nichola Wren and 15 of the best mounted men crossed the river and spent the night in the brush. As they were approaching camp about daylight, they came suddenly upon a caballado of horses and mules... apparently the Indians had been on a horse-stealing excursion. One of the Rangers killed a Comanche and was himself killed."
