1990 "Old Betsy" The Lifting Experience! OLD BETSY" "With all the education, awards, and military experiences I have had, the most cheerful memorable experiences involved the operation of a 10,000 lb. capacity, rough terrain forklift, who I fondly named "Old Betsy". Under the 632 CS Co Maint NonDiv DS Fort Stewart, Georgia during Hurricane Hugo in the autumn of 1990 and during the Gulf War of 1991, I spent thousands of long consecutive hours loading hundreds of trucks with "Old Betsy." For a moral boost during the Gulf War, the U.S. Army command authorized painting of names with logos on the side doors of military vehicles. The Battalion and Company Officers woke up one morning to find a big red heart, with a black arrow piercing it, painted on the 10,000 pound capacity forklift with the name "Old Betsy" painted under the heart. All vehicle logos were supposed to be painted in black and require approval before painted on. It was controversial at first, but the command decided to let it slip by. Soon, mission requests were coming down from the Battalion Command for "Old Betsy" by name."
