Jan 1776 – Pennsylvania
The Continental Congress in session in Philadelphia on June 14, 1775 voted to raise companies of riflemen. Six of these companies were to be from Pennsylvania, however the response of the frontiersmen of Pennsylvania was so great the number was increased to eight and then to nine. Collectively, the companies were originally called Thompson's Rifle Battalion. The battalion was under the command of William Thompson of Carlisle, Cumberland County. For a brief period in 1775, the battalion was called the Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment. When the army was reorganized in January of 1776, the battalion was called The First Continental Regiment and following another reorganization in July 1776, the rifle battalion officially became the First Pennsylvania Regiment of the Continental Line.

Eight of these were to be raised by Pennsylvania, formed into a battalion, and commanded by officers recommended by the Assembly or Convention of the Province.
These were Captain Nagle’s Company of Riflemen, and it was called “Colonel Thompson’s Battalion of Riflemen.” Each company consisted of one Captain, three Lieutenants, four Sergeants, four Corporals, a Drummer or Trumpeter, and sixty-eight Privates. The pay was as follows: Captain, $20 a month; Lieutenant, $13-l/3; Sergeants, $8; Corporal, $7-l/3; Drummer $7-l/3; Private $6-2/3. They supplied their own arms and clothes.
